“Watch competitors and the news” is too broad to guide a decision. The team may receive a stream of links without knowing which event matters. Useful monitoring begins with a question and evidence, not a large number of alerts.
Five steps to useful monitoring
- Name the object: a company, website, product or regulatory topic. Write down which decision a material change could affect.
- Restrict sources, language, keywords and exclusions. If the feed repeats irrelevant results, narrow the subject first.
- Separate a new link from a new fact. Compare the event date, primary source and previous evidence. A repost of an old statement is not a fresh regulatory decision.
- Keep a short finding, source link and outstanding verification question. A person should check important facts before commercial or legal action.
- Choose a frequency. Not every topic needs a daily check. After a week, assess which findings affected work and refine the filters.
Example: tracking changes to program terms
Suppose a team tracks a partner program. Instead of “all company news,” define the official program site, the terms page, language, comparison with the previous version and the person who verifies changes. A new page is a candidate finding.
